Last Friday, two weeks after assuming control of PeopleSoft, Oracle issued pink slips to an estimated 5,000 employees (about 9% of the combined Oracle/PeopleSoft company — or — 40% of PeopleSoft's premerger headcount). Oracle's discussion of this activity highlights three points. First, 90% of PeopleSoft's engineering and development staff is being invited to remain. Second, Oracle plans to continue supporting and enhancing PeopleSoft and JD Edwards product lines through 2013. Third, Oracle has started work on something dubbed "Project Fusion," to merge the three product lines.
