Article: Direct Store Delivery

Direct Store Delivery (DSD), also known as route accounting, is the regular delivery of consumer packaged goods (CPG) to retail stores around the world. Soft drinks, beer, bottled water, potato chips, bread, cigarettes, magazines, and newspapers all have to be delivered and accounted for.

A large number of consumer packaged goods companies rely on handheld computers to keep track of their global retail store delivery operations. The advancement of wireless handheld computing systems has greatly contributed to a new wave of sophisticated route accounting systems that help companies gain a new edge in this cost-conscious industry.

Route sales combines the processes and applications of both pre-sales and delivery. In addition, when the delivery driver does not know the exact amount the retailer will order, they load the truck with an amount of goods based on the retailer's order history. At the store, the delivery driver takes a new order (pre-sell function), which he or she immediately delivers from the truck's inventory. Finally, the driver generates an invoice that includes the new sales order and adjustments and leaves it with the customer.
