RFID Supply Chain: Alien Technology Awarded Contract By Wright Brothers Institute To Support Implementation Of Navy BRE Project

Alien Technology Corporation recently announced that it has been awarded a contract by Wright Brothers Institute to help support the broad deployment of advanced RFID capabilities for supply chain management demonstrated in the Navy's Bangor RFID Evaluation (BRE) Project. Alien will work with partner CACI International Inc., a leading provider of IT solutions for defense and BRE's prime contractor, to deliver RFID technology and products – including Alien Gen2 RFID readers and tags – within a "BRE-like" logistics package for organizations throughout the Department of the Navy to improve storage and distribution operations, increase materials movement accuracy, and comply with the Department of Defense's RFID Policy of July 2004.

"The BRE Project achievements at Bangor, in which Alien participated, are forming the basis for the premier shore-based RFID deployment within the Department of Defense," said Susan Pearson, VP Alliances, Alien Technology. "Alien will be working with CACI to refine these achievements and export them to support NAVSUP's supply warehousing operations across scores of sites. We are pleased to be adding to our portfolios of defense and SAP-based applications while reinforcing our position as the leading passive RFID technology supplier to the DoD."

In March 2006, NAVSUP launched BRE at the Fleet and Industrial Supply Center Puget Sound Supply Department to evaluate the return on investment of implementing a passive RFID capability within Navy warehouses and supply points. The BRE implementation combined the installation of RFID with a SAP-WMS system and business process enhancements to provide positive operational improvements. NAVSUP's goal is to now extend the implementation of BRE as a base solution to other sites, initially six sites on each coast.

BRE is part of a multi-million dollar Navy RFID implementation plan, of which $45 million has been approved. Exporting the BRE solution set to multiple sites will help the Navy achieve comprehensive asset visibility and responsive warehousing across the supply chain, with RFID as the key enabler. At the same time, BRE will enable the retirement of aging legacy systems, drive standardization on SAP, and automate manual processes for improved efficiency and accuracy.
