RFID Deployment: Accellos, Inc. And The RFID Consortium Members Announce The Successful Development Of RFID Capabilities Within Accellos Enterprise 3PL
Accellos, Inc., a global provider of warehouse, 3PL, logistics, transportation and mobile fleet management solutions, announced recently the completion of their RFID consortium initiative, which addresses the emerging RFID requirements of the third-party logistics (3PL) market in the freezer, cooler and dry warehousing environments. The purpose of the project was to develop RFID Slap and Ship capability that meets the compliance requirements of specific retailers.
The RFID consortium, a "best of breed" group comprised of manufacturers, operators and system integrators was a unique approach to enhancing the Accellos Enterprise 3PL product, with each member of the RFID consortium having an equal vote in all project related decisions.
The consortium was set up as a separate business entity, complete with a separate bank account to hold funds invested by consortium members. A charter was developed to clearly outline the defined goals and objectives, a formal board was developed, and meetings were scheduled on a regular basis to report on progress and issues encountered.
"It was a very enriching experience to work with the consortium members to develop the RFID operational capabilities of the Accellos Enterprise 3PL product and it was a unique approach that proved to be very successful in the end," stated Joe Couto, senior vice president at Accellos, Inc. "The consortium members had incredible insight into the future functionality requirements of this attribute that aided Accellos in developing the feature."
The RFID consortium's mission was to advance the application and effectiveness of the new generation of warehouse tracking and retrieval technology in the controlled temperature 3PL sector of the supply chain. Accellos successfully spearheaded the effort as well as provided its Accellos Enterprise 3PL logistics management software for the consortium's two full-sized live production laboratories. The production facility labs are located at Confederation Freezers, Brampton, Ontario Canada and at Richmond Cold Storage, Richmond, Virginia USA.
"Being a participant in the RFID consortium has been a very positive experience," said Joe Knausdorf, IT Director, Richmond Cold Storage and member of the consortium. "It was very rewarding to know that the member's experience and knowledge had an impact and a voice about the application's development."
Technology members were LXE, Psion Teklogix, End-to-End Group, Intermec Technologies Corporation, CapTech Ventures, Inc. and bayMountain, Inc. Logistics operator members include Confederation Freezers, Richmond Cold Storage, Hopewell Distribution Services and Versa Cold Holding Corp., all major operators of freezer and controlled temperature 3PL warehouse facilities in North America.
