Pharmaceutical Supply Chain: H. D. Smith Receives Value Chain Leadership Award
SupplyScape Corporation, the provider of software to drive maximum business value and security in the pharmaceutical value
chain, recently announced that H. D. Smith is the first recipient of the Value Chain Leadership Award. The Value Chain Leadership Award recognizes forward-thinking companies that are solving pharmaceutical supply chain challenges in breakthrough ways.
The Value Chain Leadership Award was announced at SupplyScape's customer gala held on Monday, June 11, in Boston, Mass. The event coincided with the Healthcare Distribution Management Association (HDMA) Distribution Management Conference. More than 125 healthcare executives from leading pharmaceutical, biotechnology, wholesaler, distributor, and chain pharmacy companies attended the event at Fenway Park, home of the 2004 World Champion Boston Red Sox.
H. D. Smith was recognized for its industry-leading contributions towards increasing patient safety as the first pharmaceutical wholesaler to adopt a safe and secure pharmaceutical supply chain, providing electronic pedigrees, and receiving and distributing serialized product with radio frequency identification (RFID) tags across the supply chain. As early as 2004, H. D. Smith was already scanning Purdue Pharma's RFID tagged OxyContin pain medication at the item level into its warehouse, as well as tagging high-profile drugs that came in untagged and shipping them to pharmacies. At the same time, the company was also piloting a new supply chain anti-counterfeiting and security system, using electronic pedigree software to track and authenticate the pedigree for each incoming drug across the SupplyScape Value Network.
"Our main goal is patient safety, which is why we've led the industry in electronic pedigree and authentication implementation," said Robert Kashmer, vice president of information technology at H. D. Smith. "We are honored to receive SupplyScape's Value Chain Leadership Award and to be recognized for our product security contributions and our corporate business success."
H. D. Smith, headquartered in Springfield, Ill., is the fourth largest national pharmaceutical wholesaler in the United States. The company is a pioneer in enterprise, supply chain, and logistics technologies to assure quick and accurate delivery of medical devices, prescription medications, and over-the-counter products to its pharmacy customers.
"SupplyScape is proud to recognize H. D. Smith for the leadership it has demonstrated by embracing electronic pedigrees and RFID ahead of industry," said Shabbir Dahod, SupplyScape's president and CEO. "Innovative companies, such as H. D. Smith, are leveraging SupplyScape's product security solutions, the foundation of our On-Demand Value Network, to increase patient safety, enhance collaboration within the supply chain, and improve business performance."
