Migrating From Mainframe-Based Applications to SAP

Problem/Situation: CITGO was in the process of migrating a majority of its mainframe based application systems to SAP. Included in this process was the migration of CITGO's 100 EDI Trading Partner base.

Consideration/Criteria: CITGO wanted to purchase a client/server, UNIX based EDI translation software package that was fully integrated with SAP. CITGO wanted a product that could be up and running in a short implementation time of approximately 8 weeks. CITGO needed a product that could process multiple transactions at the same time and handle a volume of approximately 7000 transactions per day. CITGO's legacy EDI included ANSI, VICS, UCS and EDIFACT standards.

CITGO' legacy software supported the following EDI transactions:
110 Air Freight Detail Invoice
210 Freight Invoice
214 Freight Status
810 Invoice
813 Tax Filing
820 Remittance Advice
824 Application Advice
827 Financial Return Notice
831 Control Total
832 Price Catalog
850 Purchase Order
856 Ship Notice
860 Purchase Order Change
861 Receiving Advice
864 Text Message
875 Purchase Order
880 Invoice
997 Acknowledgment
Selection/Solution: CITGO selected the Eclipse suite of products because of the quick implementation time, the simple integration with SAP and purchase price. The Eclipse EDI mapping tool also added in the selection of the TIE product. The mapping product showed to allow great flexibility and functionality in mapping. The SAP integration was the main selling point of the Eclipse product. The Eclipse product provided a check box for SAP related EDI maps and then a few script changes. Once these were in place the Eclipse product was configured and talking to SAP.

Result/ROI: CITGO's SAP implementation took two years. CITGO chose a phased SAP implementation based on business units. Over the two year project CITGO was able to successfully migrate 100 existing EDI Trading Partners from its mainframe based EDI translation software to the Eclipse product. CITGO also added an additional 1700 EDI trading partners with its Light Oil implementation. TIE Commerce
