iGPS CEO Bob Moore Addresses Sustainability Issues At Green Supply Chain Forum
Bob Moore, CEO of Intelligent Global Pooling Systems, operator of the world's first RFID-tagged, all-plastic pallet pool, recently addressed supply chain executives at The Green Supply Chain Forum at Florida International University in Miami.
This Forum brought together some of the world's leading green supply chain experts from academia, government, and a variety of business sectors to share best practices and discuss opportunities for future collaboration. A series of panels and lectures presented the state of the art in Green Supply Chain practices and its application across the supply chain.
Moore's presentation emphasized the numerous environmental benefits of iGPS' all-plastic pallet compared to the conventional multi-use wood pallet. iGPS pallets are 30 percent lighter, more durable than wood, are impervious to infestation, easier to handle and 100 percent recyclable.
"iGPS' plastic pallets support environmental Sustainability in several very important ways," said Moore in his presentation. "The first is that by manufacturing pallets that are made of plastic instead of wood, we are helping to conserve our precious forests. Forests help regulate the climate by absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas. When cleared, they release their stored carbon back into the atmosphere, along with more carbon from the soil beneath them.
"With fewer trees to help absorb the ever-increasing carbon dioxide emissions from society's use of fossil, carbon-rich fuels and pollution-causing heavy industries, deforestation has not only become a serious worldwide problem, but also a serious national problem."
"Over 40% of our nation's hardwoods are being chopped down for pallets," Moore said, causing serious collateral damage, including harm to wildlife, soil erosion and greater chemical run-off into rivers and streams.
iGPS pallets also protect existing goods and equipment by minimizing the damage they sustain during the shipping process. While wood pallets are highly susceptible to shards, splinters and protruding nails that can do serious damage to valuable cargo, as well as interfere with automated retrieval systems, iGPS pallets are extremely durable, uniform in shape and size, and are ideal for automated environments—saving both time and money.
