M2M Telematics Solution Saves More Than $1.6 Million

Source: Field Technologies Magazine

XATA is a supplier of telematics systems for commercial vehicles. To keep its long-haul trucking fleet industry customers competitive, the company was tasked with developing an M2M (mobile to mobile) solution that automatically tracks driver and vehicle locations. The solution also needed to offer warehouse inventory and shipment control, provide driver communications, and keep fleets on the road around the clock. Newer commercial telematics systems offer these capabilities to long-haul trucking companies. These systems dispatch communications, provide navigational direction, track vehicle maintenance records, and re-create accidents via ‘black box' recording technology.

XATA faced several challenges when creating its solution. First, thecompany needed to add significant new functionality to its onboard telematics systems. Second, XATA needed to improve the efficiency with which it distributed software patches and special-purpose software capabilities to fleets of deployed vehicles. Finally, it needed to address these challenges even though its core competency was in embedded hardware design rather than software systems.
