CSMG And SkyBitz Announce New Research That Quantifies How Remote Asset Management Improves Security And Efficiency For Rail And Chemical Industries

CSMG, the strategy division of TMNG Global, and SkyBitz, a leading provider of remote asset management solutions and information data services, recently announced early findings of two important industry research studies, The Impact of Remote Asset Management Technology on the Freight Rail Industry and Benefits of Remote Asset Management Solutions in the Chemical Industry.

The reports, based on both primary and secondary research, find that remote asset management addresses two of the biggest challenges facing the rail and chemical industries today -- security and supply chain complexities. Remote asset management allows better tracking and management of railcars and chemical assets, fixed or mobile, and dramatically increases safety and security throughout the chain of custody. By providing location and other conditions of railcars and chemical assets such as open/close status, load levels, and temperature, asset owners and operators gain supply chain efficiencies while significantly reducing costs from accidents, damage and theft. Specifically, railcar and chemical asset owners and operators can rapidly report security concerns to the relevant parties including government agencies such as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and take steps to mitigate risks.

The rail industry report covers, among other topics:

  • National Security and Human Safety -- Railroads carry perishable items and hazardous materials and traditionally use RFID check points to monitor the railcar's location at intermittent positions along the route. Remote asset management allows for constant in-transit visibility, any time, anywhere. It also provides the ability to monitor temperature and other environmental conditions, as well as to know when cargo doors open and whether contents have leaked.
  • Increased Productivity -- Railcar idle times costs railroads time and money. Remote asset management allows fleet dispatchers to know exactly where each railcar is and if it is in use, as well as to measure wheel tread and monitor miles traveled per railcar per year, simplifying maintenance schedules.

The findings for the chemical industry cover, among other topics:

  • Security Advancements -- For hazardous materials transport, remote asset management tracks a shipment's exact location, whether it has shifted during transit or experienced a dangerous rise in pressure or temperature. Remote asset management dramatically decreases the rate of HAZMAT transportation incidents. The incident rates have increased by more than 25 percent since 2004.
  • Supply Chain Visibility -- A remote asset management solution allows companies to coordinate delivery between parties, identify delays and disruptions, utilize all available containers, and help speed the customs process when crossing the border.
  • Financial Benefits -- A remote asset management system helps lower a company's liability risk, lowers capital expenditures and reduces theft by 75 percent while remaining flexible in the global supply chain, increasing productivity, allowing businesses to grow and attract new customers.
Other reports to be released by CSMG will highlight the significant return on investment in the logistics and goods shipping industries, outlining the benefits to shippers, trucking service providers, and logistics and 3PL companies. All four reports will be released in full on January 12, 2009. The CSMG research was sponsored by SkyBitz. About TMNG Global
