CMTC And CSA Work To Improve Aerospace Supply Chain

TORRANCE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In an innovative three-year program that ends this month, California Manufacturing Technology Consulting™ partnered with the California Space Authority (CSA) to help aerospace and defense suppliers identify problems with quality and on-time delivery and put in place processes that deliver products better and faster. The project's final seminar, "Introduction to 21st Century Supply Chain Management," will be held October 27-29th at the Boeing Company in Huntington Beach, CA.

CMTC's effort was part of a $15 million technology grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to the State of California and the California Space Authority called "Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development" (WIRED). Through collaboration with its partners, CMTC pinpointed which skills are required for suppliers to maintain their ability to compete globally. CMTC worked with Raytheon, Antelope Valley College and the California Space Authority to develop "deliverables" such as online self-assessments where manufacturers evaluated their progress in key areas. Several hundred suppliers completed the survey and produced a report that identified the needs and requirements to becoming world-class suppliers as the industry's needs change.

CMTC also created a separate supply chain management self-assessment to evaluate the capabilities of Omega Precision. CMTC's work with Omega Precision was used to design a course to improve their supply chain management capabilities. Omega, a high-precision machine shop that makes parts for aircraft, was awarded the Boeing Supplier of the Year Award in May. CMTC consultant, Terry Weiner, will be presenting a case study on this program at next week's seminar.

John Anderson, CMTC's Aerospace and Defense Director, said the collaborative work with the California Space Authority to strengthen global competitiveness has been extremely rewarding. "CMTC was very pleased to partner with CSA and its other partners to improve the effectiveness of the aerospace supply chain," Anderson said.
