The company's culture of continuous improvement is a key to its success. One area that recently cried out for attention was tracking pallets of goods as they moved from production to the distribution center (DC). When pallets of the finished product were moved, their physical location was tracked using production reports, which were manually entered into a SAP R3 system.
With Familia Sancela's manual system, operators would count the goods on each pallet to check if it contained the correct amount of stock according to each SKU (stock keeping unit). The data was then input manually into the system.
With this approach there were always discrepancies in stock control records, mainly due to human error—either when the goods were counted or when the information was input in the system.
