Case Study: FMI International Increases Order Fulfillment Accuracy With Honeywell

FMI's customer base includes some of the world's largest retailers, including Wal-Mart and Kids Headquarters - North America's largest distributor of children's apparel. To meet the inventory needs of these companies, FMI offers a "Pick and Pack" service. "Pick & Pack" is favored by retailers for its ability to reduce costs associated with on-premise overstocking. By shipping only the exact product that requires replenishment to the retailers, FMI helps to keep popular items on the shelves while preventing an overflow of slower moving products.

However, the inherent problem with the "Pick and Pack" service is that as bulk containers of clothing arrive at FMI's various warehouses, they must be catalogued and repackaged according to incoming orders. Historically, this process has been time-intensive and posed the risk of human error since employees used pen and paper for recording inventory updates and processing orders - without a regularly updated inventory and order processing system, it's possible that incoming orders are incorrectly processed or that they are unable to be fulfilled due to a lack of inventory.

FMI required a solution that put order information in the hands of its employees electronically (no more pen and paper) and updated its central server as orders were accepted by a packer and then physically picked, providing real-time inventory level visibility. FMI had already written a software program to track inventor y using Microsoft®'s Visual FoxPro, so a device based on the Windows Mobile™ OS was a must - it would mean easier application portability resulting in faster integration.
