Article: RFID And The Current Supply Chain
In a recent interview conducted by the Supply Chain Market Editorial staff, Chris Werling, president of Cornerstone Solutions, offered his views and advise on the short-term and long-term effects of RFID on the supply chain.
What is the state of technology adoption in the supply chain space as it relates to the large companies and the SMB market?
Many larger companies are attacking complete supply chain initiatives as it relates to a complex distribution network, collaborative sourcing of product, vendor managed inventory, and significant vendor requirements (e.g. labeling, EDI, RFID). Larger companies also have a significant number of disparate systems that run on multiple platforms. Gathering data across their supply chain is often more difficult.
In the SMB market, many companies approach their supply chain on a much smaller scale. It is often easier to pinpoint measurable projects that can achieve a quicker result. The environment is also often open to consider these types of projects as the approval process is far less political. Many SMB companies prefer to approach supply chain initiatives in proven, measurable projects (e.g. implement WMS to reduce overtime by x% and inventory by x%) instead of a larger supply chain rollout (e.g. evaluate total supply chain inventory levels across the network to determine sku mix/facility, closing of warehouses, utilization of 3rd party distribution or other solutions).
